Our Past

July 1982 – April 1996

On Easter Sunday, 1982, Rev. Jim Sample held his first service in Olathe, Kansas. The people met at what is now the Olathe Civic Theater Association Building (500 E Loula Street). Rev. Sample was a member of Life Tabernacle in Kansas City, Missouri, but had felt a burden to start a church in Olathe, in part to accommodate some families who were driving from Olathe to attend Life Tabernacle. A few short months later, on July 2, 1982, New Life Pentecostal Church was officially opened.

The church held service in a building owned by the Olathe Deaf Club, located at 221 South Chestnut Street. This became the temporary home for New Life until after the election of our second pastor.

After three years of dedication to the work in Olathe, Rev. Sample felt led to pursue another field of labor. On July 14th, 1985, Rev. L. D. Hilton became the pastor.

On October 30, 1987, we held a ground breaking service on a piece of property located at 119th Street and Highway 7. August 28, 1988 was our last night at the Deaf Club, and we held our first service in the new building on September 4th. The building was dedicated October 21, 1988 by Rev. L.E. Westburg.

Not long after moving into the building, the church was notified that the Kansas Department of Transportation would be expanding what is now Highway 7, and would, therefore, have to demolish our building. Thankfully, they gave us enough money to purchase the adjacent land so we could build our second (and current) building.

We obtained a building permit for our second building on January 27, 1992, located at 11995 S. Monticello Terrace.  Pastor Hilton preached the first service in this building on May 31, 1992.

Tragically, Pastor Hilton suffered a fatal heart attack on Sunday evening February 4, 1996, having served New Life and the Olathe area for almost 11 years. His commitment and hard work provided the foundation for the church to continue to thrive to this day.

Our Present

1996 – Today

On April 14, 1996, our current pastor, Rev. Gregory K. Riggen accepted the call to serve our church. During one of his first messages he preached, he said,  “We don’t always understand why things happen, but we can always trust God to make it right.” During his time as pastor, we have grown and have continued to reach out to our community and the world.

In January of 2013 the interior of our current building underwent major renovation. This remodeling project lasted approximately four months and provided the church with a fresh look.

In June 2013, Pastor Riggen was invited to address a group of Trinitarian pastors in Zimbabwe (on the continent of Africa). During his first trip, more than 50 people received the revelation of the Oneness of God, and were baptized in Jesus’ name. As a result, many doors have opened throughout Zimbabwe, and in the countries of Botswana and Malawi. In order to accommodate these efforts, Pastor Riggen founded A2Z Missions, Incorporated (a 501c3 organization). Several times each year Pastor Riggen travels to Africa with a group of ministers in order to preach the gospel. Already, literally hundreds of people have been converted, baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost. (To learn more about A2Z Missions, visit a2zmissions.org.)

On April 6, 2014 we launched our first satellite campus. The Truth Church of Gardner located near downtown Gardner at 115 W Warren Street. The church is being overseen by Rev. Andrew Merriman. (To learn more about the Truth Church of Gardner visit truthchurchofgardner.com.)

In December of 2014, we started laying the groundwork for our second satellite campus, which will be located in LaCygne, Kansas. Rev. Brandon Hilton began holding bible studies at a local bank located at 505 E Market Street. We are hoping we will soon be able to acquire a building which will house this new work.

Our Future

In the very near future, New Life Pentecostal Church will assume a new name. We will become “The Truth Church of Olathe, Kansas.” This new name will more accurately reflect our goal of transcending denominations and religious organizations in order to proclaim the pure and simple truth found only in the Word of God.

Also, it is our goal to continue to plant churches throughout the Kansas City metro. As God provides the money and manpower, we will reach into the surrounding cities and start satellite locations so as to provide a witness of Biblical Truth. Each new location will retain the name “The Truth Church,” but will be individually identified by the name of the city in which the church is located (i.e., “The Truth Church of Gardner, Kansas”).

Furthermore, plans have already been drawn by Omega Church Consultants of Indiana for the future home of our main campus, to be located at 12111 S. Monticello Terrace (next door to our current facility). The plans were divided into two phases: Phase One would provide seating for over 500 people, Phase Two will accommodate approximately 1,500, and will include a Christian School, a Family Life Center, and Guest Quarters for visiting speakers.

The future is bright for New Life/Truth Church! Great things are happening, and we are expecting even greater things to come! Now is the time to join us. We invite you to come GROW with us!
